1847 English Churchwomen of the Seventeenth Century Stanford Swords New for sale we have an 1847 American edition of English Churchwomen of the Seventeenth Century, published in New York by Stanford and Swords at No. 139 Broadway, the leading Episcopal publishing house in the city at that time. The work was issued anonymously, as was common for devotional and biographical books connected with the High Church revival of the 1840s, and the title page carries a four line verse on faith, hope, and charity. The front free endpaper is signed in period ink S. B. Gordon.

The book gathers biographical notices of devout Englishwomen of the seventeenth century, presented as representatives of a period rather than isolated figures. The preface explains that the accounts were assembled from funeral sermons, memoirs, and earlier authorities including Clarendon, Lloyd, Fuller, Evelyn, Collins, Ballard, Lodge, Gilpin, and Whittaker, and argues against the notion that the piety of the nation was centered entirely in the Puritan school during the civil war years. Subjects and figures treated include Lady Falkland, Lady Halkett, Mrs. Basire, and Anne Ken, sister of Bishop Ken and wife of Izaak Walton, whose epitaph from her husband's pen appears in a footnote to the preface.

The introduction opens with the period of the Great Rebellion and gives an account of the Ferrar family, describing how in 1624 Mrs. Ferrar, Nicholas Ferrar, and the younger members of the household withdrew from the world to a devotional establishment, the community remembered as Little Gidding. The volume is a useful source for readers interested in Anglican women's history, the Ferrar circle, the English civil war era church, and the nineteenth century revival of interest in these figures that accompanied the Oxford Movement and the founding of Anglican sisterhoods.

Condition is rough and should be understood clearly before offerding. The binding is worn throughout, with the leather spine chipped and abraded, the paper covered boards rubbed with areas of loss, and the corners bumped and exposed to the board beneath. The hinges are weak and the covers are barely holding. The text block shows heavy foxing and age spotting on nearly every leaf, with toning to the edges and light soiling. The signature and a faint pencil notation appear on the front leaves. Sold as a genuine antique in poor to fair condition, suitable for a reader, a research copy, or a candidate for rebinding.

Please study all photos closely, as they form part of the description and show the true condition and the extent of the wear and foxing.
