ABOUT THIS BOOK

Pre-Adamite Man is an 1863 anthropological and occult book published under the pseudonym Griffin Lee. The book was actually written by the prominent 19th-century African American occultist, physician, and Rosicrucian Paschal Beverly Randolph.

Randolph dedicated the book to Abraham Lincoln. According to Randolph, the book featured a formal dedication to Lincoln that was reportedly made "at the expressed desire of that great martyr". Randolph and Lincoln shared a personal friendship; following Lincoln's assassination in 1865, Randolph even participated in the President's funeral train procession to Springfield, Illinois, before being forced off due to racial prejudice from other passengers

Titled Pre-Adamite Man: Demonstrating the Existence of the Human Race Upon the Earth 100,000 Thousand Years Ago!, the book argued that civilized human civilizations populated all continents of the globe tens of thousands of years before the biblical Adam.

Pre-Adamite Man: The Story of the Human Race (New York, 1863) is a controversial and influential work of speculative anthropology issued under the pseudonym Griffin Lee, now widely attributed to Paschal Beverly Randolph, one of the most important figures in 19th-century American occultism. In the book, Randolph advances the theory that fully developed human civilizations existed tens of thousands of years before the biblical Adam, drawing on comparative religion, linguistics, early archaeology, and esoteric philosophy to challenge orthodox Christian chronology. Randolph claimed initiation into Rosicrucian traditions and frequently framed his ideas as part of a revived Rosicrucian wisdom current, emphasizing hidden knowledge, ancient initiatic lineages, and humanity’s deep spiritual and historical antiquity. Though rejected by mainstream scholarship, Pre-Adamite Man occupies a significant place in American esoteric literature, reflecting the intersection of spiritualism, Rosicrucian thought, and emerging debates over human origins during the mid-19th century.

Marked as second edition , the original run was was very low , first and second editions published within months or each other , both is 1863 . I don't know if any marked as first even exist at this point

During his lifetime, he would have been described as an octoroon, or someone of one-eighth African ancestry.

ABOUT THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS BOOK

This Book belonged to and is signed on the title page by First Lieutenant William Wallace Geety, Company H, 47th Pennsylvania Volunteers .

On 29 October 1861, The New York Times conveyed dire news via a lengthy list of casualties for the 47th Pennsylvania: “Wounded—First Lieut. W.W. Geety—mortally.”

Geety’s survival was nothing short of miraculous and became the subject of multiple newspaper reports and medical journal articles. According to the Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia of Dauphin County, he was wounded in action when “grape shot struck him between the eyes and passing to the left destroyed the eye, shattered the bones of the face, injuring the nerves and lodged near the carotid artery. While lying upon the field he was for a while given up for dead.
