Description: LANNA KINGDOM RELIC - An exquisite 16th to 17th century Meditating Lanna Buddha, recovered from an old Temple in the province known as \"Mae Hong Son\", near the Burmese border and the Chiang Mai province of northern Thailand. xxxx Relics of this type were typically used as commemorative objects, modeled in the form of Buddha images presented on Altar-like Thrones, placed within shrouded niches of Temple structures, created as sanctuary like setting, and displayed in association with the life of Buddha and in remembrance of the Buddha’s existence.xxxx A sublime ‘Lanna’ style Buddha portrayed seated on a single lotus, in a meditative attitude with the legs crossed in the \'Virasana\' pose, with the left hands rested palm open on the lap, and the right hand forms the Bhumisparsa mudra, or ‘Calling the Earth to Witness’ gesture. xxxx Buddha’s profile is plump ‘Khanon Thom’, depicted wearing a long monastic robe, diagonally over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder and breast uncovered, with the end fold of the robe draped in early \'Lanna\' style, ending at his chest level.xxxx The face shows indigenous characteristics to the region with a gentle expression, featuring a rounded face with downcast eyes open, a broad nose, and a wide mouth with rather thick lips, with the slightest suggestion of a smile. Ridged eyebrows are joined at the center to form a bow, and elongated earlobes stop short of the shoulders. The head is featured with a ridge carved in relief separating the hairline from his forehead, with pin-style hair curls, surmounted by a domed \'Ushnisha\' which terminates into a small bulbous ornament finial.xxxx Cast in the lost wax method, the bronze surface has a rich grayish-brown patina base, with light encrustation from its temple environment. The original core, within the bronze consisted of a tempered sandy-clay mixture and is completely intact. xxxx This meditating image is a fantastic example of the subline craftsmanship and artistic achievement produced by the sculptors of the Early Lanna period.
