HISTORY:

BORN IN 1921, EARL WILDE WAS A WEAPONS TESTER IN ENGLAND DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR, THEN LATER COMPETED IN AND WON SEVERAL PISTOL SHOOTING COMPETITIONS AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL. AFTER A SHORT CAREER AS AN INTERIOR DECORATOR AT WESTMOUNT (1), HE BEGAN CARVING DECOYS IN 1946.

ACCORDING TO ST. ONGE, IN HIS BOOK SCULPTEURS D’ APPELANTS DU QUEBEC, WILDE PRODUCED NEARLY 200 DECOYS OVER HIS CAREER. MANY WITH SIMILAR SCULPTURAL FORM AND COLORATION TO THOSE OF BILL COOPER — THOUGH WILDE CHOSE TO PAINT THE FEATHERS WHILE COOPER USED EXTENSIVE CARVING (1).

IN BOTH 1980 AND 1981, WILDE ENTERED THE PLACE BONAVENTURE OF MONTREAL’S HUNTING SCULPTURE COMPETITIONS, MAKING THE PODIUM BOTH YEARS WITH THIRD PLACE FINISHES IN EACH (1).
