These are very early Shakespeare line plates - we have the matching covered butter dish with this gold decaling if you are looking to build a set - see store link below (we do combine shipping if purchasing more than any one item in the store!)! These are thick pieces that were made very well back in the day!Shakespeare pieces are very rare indeed as this line was the second line Homer Laughlin ever produced! Anything of the Laughlin China Co. from the very early years is difficult to find! This White with Gold Trim ironstone covered dish / casserole definitely qualifies!Could also be used as a great Farmhouse Planter or Decor - beautiful antique piece! LA great one to display and use.
The Shakespeare shape was produced by the Homer Laughlin China Company, circa 1886. The shape was named after Shakespeare Laughlin, Homer\'s brother, who died in 1881.The flatware is a plain, round shape whereas the hollowware is bulbous and somewhat oversized. The shape is easily identified by the ornate handles. This shape was discontinued before the Newell plants were built in the early 1900s. As a result, all Shakespeare pieces were made at the East End plants in East Liverpool, Ohio. The backstamp is the original Homer Laughlin backstamp: \'Eagle-over-Lion\' mark over Premium Stone China Homer Laughlin
Included in this lot are:(2) 6-1/2\" Soup bowl or sauceboat liners plates (could be used as large saucers as shown in some of the pictures, but also used as soup bowls)(2) 2-1/2\" tall Coffee Cups / Teacups
(1) 7\" side / dessert / cake plate(3) 9\" dinner / luncheon platesCondition: Very good preowned antique condition. No chips or cracks on any of the pieces. Some under the glaze crazing, common of antique pottery. Pieces may have other smallfactory production imperfections such as sand bumps, glaze pops, glaze misses possible - all normal factory production. The gold lines around the edge and verge lines show some wear from use and handling, some more faded than others. Overall, amazing condition for this rare set of matching antique pieces.
