In a real Victorian manor, large cuts of roasted meat were brought up from the basement kitchen to the dining room. These domes (also known as food cloches or dish domes)date to the mid nineteenth century andwere used to trap heat and keep the food warm on the long journey upstairs.The largest cover was meant for the main roast (like beef or mutton), the medium for a secondary dish or poultry, and the smallest for a side dish or fish platter. In the English dollhouse kitchen, these would have sat proudly displayed, as they are a sign of wealth. They may have been made in Germany for the English market or in England. Sincethey are cast fromlead or high-lead pewteralloys, which was common in the first half of the 19th century, I recommend washing your hands thoroughly after handling.
