The 1998-99 season was a particularly significant one for Nummelin. Playing defense for HC Davos, he recorded 11 goals and 42 assists for 53 points in 44 National League games, finishing as the team's leading scorer ahead of forwards Sandy Jeannin and Reto von Arx. His 42 assists and 53 points were also the highest totals by a defenseman in the league that season. He additionally recorded 2 goals and 2 assists in five Spengler Cup games. Nummelin later entered the NHL with the Columbus Blue Jackets after being selected 133rd overall in the 2000 NHL Draft, and in 2024 he was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame.
