1998 Philadelphia (no mint mark) Lincoln Penny with a Phantom S Mint Mark.
The "Phantom S" refers to a faint, ghostly, raised shape that resembles an "S" mint mark appearing near the date on 1998 pennies struck in Philadelphia. Since Philadelphia pennies are not supposed to have a mint mark at all, this caused a major stir among collectors when it was first discovered.
The main theory amongst experts about the origin of the Phantom S Error is that the dies intended for the San Francisco Mint were reused in Philadelphia. The mint marks would have been polished off, but not completely, leaving a "phantom" faint “S” behind.
