James Nicolson was a native of Pittenweem who came to Falkirk in the 19th century and became manager of the established business of watchmaker and jeweler David Strang, whose Falkirk business dated back to 1837. Nicolson ultimately took over the business in 1897, operating from 142 High Street, Falkirk, where he traded as a watchmaker and jeweler and offered watches, clocks, jewelry, silver and electroplate. By 1900, contemporary advertisements for James Nicolson, Watchmaker and Jeweler specifically promoted an extensive selection of ladies’ dress, engagement and wedding rings, placing this ring within the tradition of a respected Falkirk jeweler establishment that served customers during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Nicolson was also regarded locally as an expert in clockmaking, and contemporary historical accounts describe him as one of Falkirk’s oldest and best-known businessmen.
