2 Photos show one primary aircraft, which is one of the most famous planes in early aviation history.
✈️ The Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny"
The biplane in the image is a Curtiss JN-4, famously known as the "Jenny."
This was the most common and important American primary training aircraft during World War I. An estimated 95% of all American and Canadian pilots learned to fly on a "Jenny."
However, this photograph almost certainly shows the plane in its second life.
A Barnstorming Scene: After WWI ended, the U.S. government sold thousands of these planes as military surplus, sometimes for as little as $500.
The 1920s: This created the "barnstorming" era. Former military pilots would buy these cheap, reliable Jennys and fly them across the country, landing in farm fields (like the one pictured) to offer rides to the public for a few dollars.
The Photo's Clues: The scene perfectly captures this: a grassy, informal airfield, a group of men in civilian clothes gathered to watch, and a pilot (in the rear cockpit) with a passenger (in the front cockpit).
🏍️ The Other Vehicle
To the far left, partially cut off, is another vehicle from the same period: a motorcycle with a sidecar. This was a common mode of transport in the 1910s and 1920s and fits perfectly with the 1920s barnstorming setting.
In all, this is a wonderful snapshot of the "Roaring Twenties," when aviation was new and exciting, and pilots like the one pictured were bringing the thrill of flight to small towns across America.
