Made by Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF), one of the most renowned German manufacturers of decorative metalwork, the ornate silver-plated base is clearly marked WMF / EP NS.
What makes this example particularly special is the survival of its original blue glass bowl. The fragile glass components of epergnes were frequently broken, lost or separated from their metal mounts over the course of more than 120 years, making surviving WMF examples with their original glass increasingly difficult to find.
The glass itself is extraordinary: a pale opalescent centre develops into a vivid turquoise-blue towards the deeply ruffled rim. Combined with the richly decorated WMF silver-plated pedestal, it creates a dramatic and highly sculptural table centrepiece.
The epergne was originally conceived as a larger tiered composition with an additional upper glass element. The original upper element is no longer present. This listing therefore includes the original WMF silver-plated base and its original blue opalescent glass bowl, exactly as shown in the main photographs.
A wonderfully adaptable antique item. A lot of potential in decoration
The surviving construction also offers an unusual opportunity to reinterpret the piece without altering the original WMF components.
The central fitting can accommodate suitably sized decorative elements such as an antique glass trumpet or vase, a candle or a decorative stopper. The blue glass bowl itself is removable and can also be exchanged for another compatible glass vessel, completely changing the character of the piece.
Several photographs show different styling possibilities — from a dramatic floral centrepiece to a candle arrangement or an alternative crystal composition.
