Rare Japanese Satsuma Biwa — 4-String Traditional Instrument
Beautiful and unusual Japanese Satsuma biwa, a traditional 4-string Japanese instrument.
The instrument is strung with silk strings, holds tension and plays, and includes the makeshift plectrum shown in the photos.
I acquired this because of its rarity and beautiful construction, but biwa restoration is not my expertise, so I am selling it AS-IS.
Condition / Restoration
I had the instrument reviewed by a biwa performer/specialist, who noted:
- The bridge appears to have been modified and may need replacement/reconstruction.
- The first fret/holder may need adjustment.
- The nut/fret height may need fine-tuning.
- One tuning peg appears to have been replaced.
- Professional setup/restoration is recommended.
The body appears to be in good condition overall, with some scratches, scuffs and finish wear consistent with age/use.
This is a playable instrument, but it should be considered a restoration/project piece rather than a professionally set-up performance instrument.
I cannot verify the exact age, maker or provenance. (its old and awesome!!!)
SOLD AS-IS. Please examine all photos carefully and ask any questions before purchasing.
