Rare Pair of Antique 17th/18th C. Japanese Kakiemon Porcelain Dishes – Boys Flying a KiteItem OverviewUp for sale is a magnificent, highly collectible matching pair of genuine antique Japanese Kakiemon export porcelain dishes, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century (Edo Period). These exquisite dishes feature a rare, finely hand-painted narrative scene depicting two young children flying a kite under a wide, elegant negative space—a classic hallmark of the Kakiemon aesthetic.Design & Decorative Features - The Central Motif:Features two boys meticulously painted in traditional iron-red, turquoise green, and cobalt blue overglaze enamels playfully maneuvering a flying kite.
- The Body Paste:Features a beautiful milky-white (nigoshide) porcelain body enhanced by a subtle, rare molded basketweave (ozier) pattern across the well.
- The Rim:Sculpted with a delicate scalloped/lobed edge, highlighted by a vibrant scrolling floral and iron-red rim border.
- The Underside:Clean, smooth, unglazed circular footrim completely unmarked, which is perfectly correct and textbook for authentic export Kakiemon wares of this period. Natural minor pinholes and small iron/mineral spots are visible in the glaze on the reverse, confirming its ancient, wood-fired kiln origin.
Measurements - Diameter:Approximately 6 ¼ inches (15.9 cm) each.
Condition Report - Dish 1:The porcelain body is structurally sound with no cracks. There is a tiny, shallow historic glaze flake/flea bite on the uppermost edge of the scalloped rim.
- Dish 2:Shows a clean, vertical hairline crack extending from the right side of the well up through the decorated rim border (clearly visible in close-ups).
- Both dishes show incredibly vibrant enamel preservation with minimal, expected surface/glaze wear consistent with 300+ years of age. No signs of modern restoration or repair. Please study all high-resolution photos carefully as they form part of the description.
