Before Vs. became the official name of the 1993 release, Pearl Jam planned to title the album 5 against 1, a phrase drawn from the lyrics of their song “Animal.” The phrase encapsulated the internal and external struggles the band was facing at the time — a tug-of-war between individual creativity and group compromise, personal identity and public perception.
Guitarist Stone Gossard saw 5 against 1 as symbolic of the tension that fuels artistic creation, while Eddie Vedder referenced the title as a reflection of the band’s resistance to media pressure and industry competition.
Though the band eventually opted for the more cryptic and concise Vs., the spirit of Five Against One lives on in rare early merchandise like this shirt — as well as in the few cassette copies that still bear the original title.
I worked for Nice Man as the Creative Director and designerfor several bands including Pearl Jamfrom 1991-97. My key role wasworking with the bands or band managers to develop their retail and tourmerchandise.
