Relic Of The Royal George Antique 7th Edition 1844 Bound in Wood from the Wreck For Sale

Relic Of The Royal Georgean antique book, bound in wood from the planks of the wreck itself. Very unusual and rare.This book is an account of the sinking of the HMS Royal George warship at Spithead in 1782 and Tracey\'s attempt to raise her in 1783.The pages and images are in very good condition and entirely legible. The book is entirely complete. These were very nicely made and famously \"BOUND IN WOOD FROM THE WRECK\". The wooden covers and blue paper lining are all there, however the wood is split from the ages. Please see the images. This, of course, could be restored, but the seller has made no attempt to do so. It remains in its original condition as found. The only writing in the book, is a collector\'s small pencil mark that reads \"W / -\" (pictured). No other writing has been seen, nor torn or missing pages. The book is a very nice example despite the defects mentioned. The Disaster:

• The Ship:TheHMS Royal Georgewas a mighty 100-gun first-rate ship of the line and the pride of the fleet.
• The Cause:While anchored in calm waters off Portsmouth undergoing routine maintenance known as a \"parliamentary heel,\" the ship was tilted to repair a pipe near the waterline. Water rushed through the open lower gunports, capsizing and sinking the vessel in minutes.
• The Victims:Over 800 to 900 people died, including hundreds of crew members, visiting families, children, and Rear Admiral Richard Kempenfelt.
  

This book was in the collection of my father. He collected and sold rare and out of print books at their bookshop, Moby Dickens, in Taos, NM for almost 30 years.
