The vase offered here is a Limoges Spanish water jug, also known as a botijo ... While the base bears a name, research confirms it is not a listed Rookwood decorator or artist. This strongly suggests that the inscription relates to a special-order commission for a customer rather than to the potter. Such pieces were sometimes created for Cincinnati’s leading families and collectors, further enhancing it’s rarity and historical importance.
Standing about 10” tall, this jug is both historically and artistically significant. The distinctive double-spout form is strongly associated with Maria Longworth’s early handwork, and its gold decoration gives it an elevated presence that sets it apart from more common examples. Early Rookwood, especially signed or dated works from the 1880s, are seldom offered for sale, making this an excellent addition for serious collectors and an important representation of American ceramic history.
Rookwood was founded in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1880 by Maria Longworth Nichols, the first woman in America to establish and operate a major art pottery. At a time when women had very limited professional opportunities, she employed women as decorators and gave them a creative platform that was rare in the 19th century. The 1882 date places this jug in just the second year of production—making it a scarce survivor of Rookwood’s formative years.
