This is the story of strawberry farming in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. How the commercial base of that parish went from relative poverty clearing lumber and producing only limited cotton in the early 1800s, to comparative affluence growing \"Klondyke\" strawberries at a level that made Louisiana the number one State in value added by 1931.
While the growing of strawberries might seem an uninteresting topic, the author\'s research breathes life into the narrative. The production, sale, and transportation of strawberries had a large impact on much of southern Louisiana in the first three decades of the 20th century. It also drew thousands of immigrants from Italy and Hungary to the area, and many of the extended generations remain today. The book is illustrated with hundreds of photos.
