Sabal bermudana is a large-leafed Sabal species endemic to the island of Bermuda. It typically grows to a height of 6 to 12 meters (20 to 40 feet) and has a spread of about 3 to 4 meters (10 to 13 feet). Sabal bermudana is a slow-growing tree that prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types. It is also tolerant of salt spray and wind, making it a popular choice for coastal landscapes. Its fruits are small, black, and berry-like, and are an important food source for a variety of wildlife, including birds and mammals.
The Bermuda Palmetto can also tolerate quite hard frosts and freezes, making it suitable for zone 9a and possibly slightly lower. It\'s a rather slow-growing palm, as far as Sabal species go. But what it lacks in speed of growth, it makes up for in its stature and beauty! A very sturdy palm with a fat, stocky trunk and thick, wind-resistant leaves.
Germination of Sabal bermudana seeds is pretty easy. Give it some bottom heat and keep the seed-starting media (I use a 50/50 mix of peat moss/perlite) moist but not sopping wet.
