Studio Art Pottery — Raku / Pit-Fire Face Effigy Spirit Rattle
A compelling piece of handmade studio ceramic in a raku or pit-fire tradition. The vessel is egg/ovoid in form with a rudimentary sculpted human face near the top — nose, brow ridge, and small mouth slit are visible. This piece is a spirit rattle: hollow construction with a nearly closed top aperture creating a sealed interior chamber with loose material inside that rattles when shaken. This closed-chamber rattle form is typical of ceremonial or effigy pieces in the folk art / outsider art ceramic tradition — it is not a vase or open vessel.
Glaze & Firing
Brown and white/cream mottled glaze with metallic and carbon-flash passages characteristic of pit-fire, saggar, or raku reduction firing. These surface variations — dark flashing, tonal mottling, metallic sheen — are intentional results of the firing process and part of the piece\'s artistic character.
