Robert Louis Stevenson — The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde — 1930 First S. G. Hulme Beaman Illustrated Edition
New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1930. First edition thus and first edition illustrated by S. G. Hulme Beaman. A striking Art Deco-era interpretation of Stevenson’s immortal Gothic tale, illustrated throughout by Beaman with wonderfully dark and atmospheric imagery. Features pictorial title page, dramatic illustrated endpapers printed in red, and eight full-page black-and-white plates. Publisher’s original black cloth with gilt pictorial decoration and lettering to upper board and spine; top edge stained red, other edges untrimmed.
A particularly desirable illustrated edition of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, notable for Beaman’s eerie, stylized depictions of Victorian London and the psychological duality of Jekyll and Hyde. Copyright page states, “This Edition first published in 1930.”
Condition: Very Good. Binding shows general light shelf wear, rubbing and soiling, with wear/fraying at spine ends and corners. Page edges deckled as issued. Interior shows expected age toning but illustrations remain striking. Lacking the original dust jacket. Hinges sound and tight. A scarce and visually compelling 1930 illustrated edition of Stevenson’s classic.
