Fine in a Very Good dust jacket. The volume itself is exceptionally clean and well preserved, with a tight binding, sharp boards, clean cloth, and an unmarked interior. The dust jacket shows moderate edge wear, rubbing, and creasing, with some small tears and wear concentrated around the spine ends and corners. The jacket is now protected in a clear archival Mylar sleeve.
Hardcover bound in tan cloth with dark blue spine lettering and a South Pacific island design stamped to the front board. The title page reproduces the original 1947 Macmillan imprint. This is a later Book-of-the-Month Club reprint made to resemble the original edition; the copyright page’s reference to BOMC recordings, compact discs, and cassettes dates the actual manufacture much later than 1947. The volume contains 326 pages.
Tales of the South Pacific was James A. Michener’s first book and won the 1948 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Drawing on his wartime experiences in the Pacific, Michener created a linked collection of stories set among American servicemen and island communities during World War II. The book later became the basis for Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific and remains one of Michener’s most recognizable works.
