Key Plot Summary
A Fragile Foundation:Peter Parker visits Dr.Bromwell because he\'s feeling under the weather. The doctor warns him that Aunt May\'s health is extremely delicate and that any sudden shock or major excitement could be fatal to her.
The Goblin\'s Plot:The Green Goblin is obsessed with destroying Spider-Man once and for all.During a clash, the Goblin uses a specialized gas grenade against Spidey. While the gas doesn\'t knock him out as intended, it temporarily suppresses his spider-sense.
The Ambush:The Goblin confronts Peter right outside his home, managing to keep the skirmish obscured by smoke from his glider so Aunt May doesn\'t look out the window and see them.Having knocked Peter out, the Goblin drags his unconscious body away to an underground hideout.
The Big Reveal:When Peter wakes up tied to a chair, the Green Goblin decides to gloat, confident he has won.He pulls off his mask to reveal his true identity:Norman Osborn, industrialist and the father of Peter\'s college classmate, Harry Osborn!
Why It\'s a Classic
Mutual Identities Revealed:This issue marks the very first time the Green Goblin discovers Spider-Man is Peter Parker, and vice versa.
The John Romita Era:It kicked off the shift away from Steve Ditko\'s gritty, darker styling toward Romita\'s cleaner, more romantic and dynamic aesthetic, which permanently shaped how mainstream fans view Peter Parker, Gwen Stacy, and the rest of the cast.
Tonal Shift:The dynamic at Empire State University starts to thaw as Peter and Harry have a civil conversation, easing up slightly on the relentless \"hard-luck Peter\" routine from the earlier Ditko run.
