The American Irish by William V. Shannon, published by The Macmillan Company, New York, in 1963, is a hardcover first printing examining the political, social, and cultural history of Irish Americans. Shannon explores Irish immigration, urban political power, religion, literature, theater, prominent political figures, and the development of Irish-American identity in the United States. This copy is identified on the copyright page as a First Printing. It contains a presentation inscription dated February 10, 1964, ending with the name “Bill Shannon.” The inscription appears to be by author William V. Shannon, who was commonly known as Bill Shannon, but the signature has not been professionally authenticated. Shannon later served as United States Ambassador to Ireland from 1977 to 1981 and was a member of the editorial board of The New York Times. This early first-printing copy dates from the period immediately following the book’s original publication.
Condition: The black cloth boards have scuffing and rubbing, with heavier wear along the edges and corners. The upper and lower spine ends have fraying and areas of cloth loss. The lower spine and adjacent corner area show additional deterioration and exposed underlying material. The page edges and interior paper have age toning. Some underlined passages throughout. The binding remains intact.
