It\'s not easy reminiscing about making the album Houdini with Kurt Cobain and the Melvins. Bad communication, drugs, major label profiteering, rehab, schedule blowouts, backstabbing, and album miscrediting...it was a devil\'s album--Jonathan Burnside
Heads up: Melvins tees tend not to last very long (I\'ve owned and listed a precious few), and this is the only one I have right now: promo tee for Houdini, 1993. Production during this album was (as the epigraph here alludes) somewhat troubled and contentious to say the least. Kurt Cobain is credited as a co-producer despite not being very \"productive\" at all (he played some on two songs: \"Sky Pup\" and \"Spread Eagle Beagle\"). It was the band\'s major label debut, which meant that the pressure was on, and now the band--really for the first time--was contractually obligated to \"deliver.\" (This is precisely why the late great Steve Albini argued adamantlyagainst signing with a major. Just look at what this did to Nirvana and the Butthole Surfers, just to name two. It ultimately led to internal fracturing and greed, compromised and/or \"polished\" output, actual deaths, or some combination of all three.) Luckily, though, Atlantic Records gave the Melvins a pretty good deal, complete artistic freedom, and the resulting material (and band members) didn\'t suffer all that much, thankfully. It fact, Houdini turned out to be a decent album, despite Cobain ultimately being relieved of all production duties (apparently he was too doped up to do much of anything), and the band remained on the label for a while. Fun fact: the title \"Houdini\" was an inside joke. Osborne and Crover were fairly certain that they would summarily \"disappear\" from the label\'s roster upon delivery of the album. That Atlantic stuck it out for two more records from such a radio-unfriendly band is something of a small miracle; it would never happen today. But this was \'93; Nirvana had almost unilaterally upended the entire industry, basically overnight. Hair metal units had stopped shifting altogether, and labels began scrambling to sign virtuallyany band that might even be tangentially associated with this new \"grunge\" thing (but for this happening, no one would ever have heard of Tool, for instance). So, if one really thinks about it, the whole grunge craze was in some ways a blessing and a curse. Though it produced and proliferated an awful lot of very mediocre, dated-sounding music, it also unearthed a few rare gems which would have otherwise been left relegated to \"college radio.\" All things considered, it worked out well for the Melvins in the end. No one died, and they still get to be a band, recording and touring to this day. I\'m gonna reserve judgment on Gatta Morta for now (google it if you haven\'t heard of them). Supergroups are often little more than goofy cash-grabs, but I don\'t actually believe that it\'s about the money for these guys; and I have heard one track that they\'ve released thus far, and it doesn\'t sound bad (with King Buzz and Jeff Pinkus alone, how can you really go wrong?). So, we\'ll see.
Meanwhile, we\'ve got this dope ass tee. Now, as followers know, I list only what I would personally wear--just as a basic ethical and aesthetical bottom line; and this baby is no exception. Even a later-model vintage medium (which rarely fit me), this thing has the \"hang\" of a true vintage tee: drapes effortlessly over the bod like it was born to be there (see pics). No unsightly creases, no flares, just broken-in-without-being-busted-up goodness all the way down. Go ahead and run a search for \"vintage melvins shirt\" right here on : it\'s pretty abysmal. The current listings are all either awkward and gangly, oversized, or overpriced, or some combination of all three. You simply cannot don an ill-fitting Melvins shirt at the dive bar: that would be unseemly. Look at me in my goofy ass Melvins tee--no, just no. What you want is a dope-looking one that didn\'t break the bank--a metaphor for the band itself: something effortless that works on every level without compromising the overall aesthetic (or whatever). It\'ll sell; of this I am fairly certain. Uncompromisingly dope.
