The Military Campaigns of the Wars of the Roses, by Philip A. Haigh (1997, Trade: $4.99
The Wars of the Roses were a rather nasty Civil War inEngland that lasted just over 30 years, from 1455 to 1487, between thecompeting House of Lancaster and the House of York. They resulted eventually inthe Lancastrians being defeated, and the Yorkists taking over, which ultimatelyled to the Tudors coming to power, which one could argue was not a bad thing.During the 30 year period, 15 major battles were fought, which are the subjectof this book. Warfare back in those times was a confusing and bloody affair, mostly hand-to-hand combat in appalling weather, and it was sometimes hard totell who had won. The battle that everyone remembers is Bosworth Field in 1485,which ended with the death of Richard III (“My kingdom for a horse”, etc.), butin fact this wasn’t the last battle, which was Stoke in 1487. This nicelyillustrated large hardcover details all 15 of the battles, the tactics used andthe outcomes, and contains diagrams of each, and is very readable. This 1997Trade Paperback is in good condition, with no internal markings and minor coverwear.
