Across the Curve of the Road, painted circa 1938, depicts a boy guiding a cow across a curving rural road surrounded by farm buildings, fences, fields and rolling hills. Benton based the painting on a sketch made in Arkansas during a 1938 journey through the rural South. The incident itself occurred when Benton and a companion stopped their automobile to allow a boy to move his cow across the road, connecting the composition directly with the changing conditions of rural transportation.
