The Equus Traiani was a colossal statue of the emperor on horseback in the center of the courtyard of Trajan\'s Forum in Rome. Only the foundation of its base survives but from its dimensions it may be estimated that the base and statue together may have stood 10 - 12 meters tall. According to the historian Ammianus, when the emperor Constantius II visited the Forum two and a half centuries later in AD 357 he was so impressed by the still standing statue that he wished it was possible to re-create even just the horse. The well-known and smaller statue of Marcus Aurelius, the only surviving bronze equestrian statue from antiquity and now located inside the Capitoline Museum, largely copies the pose of Trajan\'s lost monument.
