A folding-book manuscript (parabaik) written in black ink using the Shan alphabet. The manuscript measures about 19" x 5” fully extended (2”x5” closed, approx 1” deep) and opens accordion-style, the typical medium used in early-modern Myanmar and other countries of southeast Asia. We estimate this particular item to be from the late 19th or early 20th century. Handwritten text on carved bark.
Condition is good+. There is some chipping on the edges of 1 panel, affecting some of the text and making it slightly loose, see photos for details. There is some adhesive residue on the inside of the cover panels. The pages are carved on the opposite side with scenes of the Buddha.
Cover is carved wood painted with red and gold with glass decorative flowers on both sides.
