VINTAGE JOHN JUZEK VIOLIN / VIOLA – PRAGUE CZECHOSLOVAKIA – BOW & VINTAGE CASE

Offered here is a vintage John Juzek string instrument, presented with its original/vintage hard-shell case, bow, and a fascinating piece of documented history dating back to 1977.

The instrument has a beautiful aged amber/orange-brown varnish with visible wood grain and traditional violin-family construction. It features a carved scroll, ebony fingerboard, traditional f-holes, wooden tuning pegs, tailpiece, chin rest, and a classic old-world appearance.

Included with the instrument is an original typed letter dated April 7, 1977, from the Tupelo City Schools String Instruments Program in Tupelo, Mississippi.

The letter is addressed to “Jamie” and is signed by Sam Woodward, one of the program\'s co-directors. The letter discusses sending the instrument to the student and specifically refers to it as “your viola.” It also discusses the bow, stating that the original bow had been broken and that a replacement bow was being supplied.

This original 1977 document will be included with the instrument and adds a very interesting piece of history and provenance to the sale.

John Juzek instruments were sold in North America under the John Juzek name and were produced by craftsmen in the Bohemian/Czechoslovak region. Juzek instruments are known in the vintage string-instrument market in a variety of grades and models.

This is a vintage instrument with substantial cosmetic wear consistent with age and previous use.

The instrument shows:

• Numerous scratches, scuffs and finish marks

• Areas of finish loss/wear

• Dings and abrasions

• Visible age-related varnish wear

• Wear around the edges and corners

• General signs of decades of use

• Aged/dry appearance to some components

The instrument is being sold as-is.

The bridge is not installed in the photographs, and I cannot verify whether the bridge is included separately. The strings and setup should also be considered in need of inspection/service.

The bow is included but appears to require attention/rehairing. The bow hair is loose and visibly worn in the photographs.

The vintage case is included and shows considerable age and wear, including deterioration to the exterior, interior lining and case hardware/strap. It is best considered a vintage protective case rather than a pristine original case.

I have not had this instrument professionally set up or evaluated by a luthier.

I cannot guarantee current playing condition, sound quality, neck angle, bridge fit, soundpost position, string height, peg fit, structural integrity, or whether any repairs will be necessary.

A professional inspection and setup by a qualified violin/viola luthier is recommended before regular playing.
