The Singer Sewing Machine Company introduced various

specialized attachments throughout the early to mid-20th

century to expand the capabilities of domestic lockstitch

machines. Hemstitching and picoting attachments allowed

home sewists to create decorative openwork edges on linens,

handkerchiefs, and garments that previously required

specialized industrial machinery. These complex mechanical

devices used a piercing needle and a series of levers to punch

holes in fabric and wrap threads around them.

Packaging for these accessories evolved from wooden boxes to

colorful lithographed cardboard boxes with distinctive green-

and-red holiday-style borders during the 1920s and 1930s.

Each kit typically included the main attachment assembly, a

special needle clamp, and a matching throat plate designed for

specific machine classes. Today, these vintage sewing tools are
