VINTAGE 1959 Lionel No. 0470 Missile Launching Platform with Exploding Target Car C10

Platform Design: Features a tan plastic base and Quonset hut, a rotating blue and black launcher, a yellow microwave antenna/horn, and a spring-diaphragm firing mechanism that raises the missile trajectory before launch. The Missile: Comes with a blue, white, and red IRBM-style missile equipped with a black rubber nose cone. Exploding Target Car: Includes the No. 6470 exploding boxcar (or the HO-scale No. 0847 variant for the PW-0470 set), which uses an internal spring-loaded mechanism (similar to a mousetrap) to violently throw off its sidewalls and roof when struck by the launched missile. Dimensions: The platform measures approximately 11 inches long, 10 inches wide, and 6.5 inches high. - The No. 0470 (HO Scale) is scarcer: Lionel\'s venture into HO scale during the postwar period saw lower overall production runs compared to their massive O gauge catalog. Finding a pristine No. 0470 with its correct red No. 0847 exploding target car and original packaging is a true prize for HO collectors.
- The No. 470 (O Gauge) is moderately common: Lionel produced this accessory in large numbers between 1959 and 1962. Units that are broken or missing parts are easily found on the secondary market.
- The Fragile Rubber Nose Cone: The original missiles featured a soft black rubber nose cone that often dry-rotted, split, or was lost by children during use.
- Small Plastic Components: The small yellow microwave antenna/horn and the tiny satellite dishes are frequently broken off or missing.
- Stiff Launch Diaphragms: The internal mechanism utilizes a rubber spring-diaphragm to slowly raise the launcher before firing. Over time, these rubber pieces stiffen or crack, causing the launch to malfunction.
- Yellow Component Box (1959): Highly collectible and very hard to find.
- Orange Component Box (1960–1962): Much more common.
