Jean Pefley Hawley, a talented artist and a cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on April 11, 2024. Born in 1930 in Portland, Oregon, Jean’s journey through life was rich with creativity, learning, and exploration.
Jean\'s formative years were spent in Portland, but in 1957, she laid roots in Livermore, California, where she would live until 2004 before moving to San Francisco/Daly City. It was here she continued to flourish until her passing in 2024.
An alumna of Oregon State, Jean later graduated from San Jose State University. She initially embarked on a career in education, nurturing young minds with dedication. However, her passion for the arts called her to a different path. Jean pivoted to her true love—art—where her innate talent profoundly shone. Remarkably amofferextrous, she mastered painting with both hands, and her artwork spanned a variety of media.
Jean’s influence in the art world was profound. She served as the President of the Livermore Art Association and successfully operated her own art and frame shop for 34 years, enriching the cultural fabric of Livermore.
She lived in Holland for two years, where she immersed herself in the culture and honed her artistic skills. Jean’s travels around the world didn’t just add stamps to her passport; they filled the pages of a sketchpad, replacing snapshots with sketches. These drawings were later compiled into an extraordinary book, a testament to her unique perspective and artistic flair.
Jean often reflected on her life with gratitude, considering it more wonderful than she could have ever imagined. Her legacy of love, artistry, and caring continues to inspire those who knew her.
former LAA President, Jean Pefley Hawley. Jean first came to Livermore in 1957, the same year the Livermore Art Association was founded. She later became President of the organization and was an energetic force in the Valley Arts over many years.
Jean was among the original founders of our LAA Gallery in 1974 which is still running strong at the Carnegie Building today. She ran an art and frame shop in town for 34 years. The shop was called Way-Up Art and Frame and is still a key artist supplier and frame shop today.
Jean certainly was important to our organization and the arts of Livermore.
