This is an exquisite glass and metal Victorian antique castor set from the 1800\'s. This is a Wilcox five piece silver plated castor set. It is stamped Wilcox (see photo). The Wilcox silver plate co. started in 1867. All pieces of the set are period correct but cannot be guaranteed as original to the set.
What is unique about this set is that it was originally owned by Captain Alexander Thomas Gilmore (7-11-1826 to 12-23-1891) a steamboat captain who lived in Kentucky and owned and operated several steamboats on the Ohio River. He lived in what was referred to as \"a mansion\" in Louisville, Kentucky. He gifted this castor set to his niece \"Laura Belle Merithew\" for her wedding on 10-22-1877.
Also included in the sale is a signed letter by Laura Belle Merithew\'s daughter (Lilly \"Peckinpaugh\") dated Dec. of 1956 who confirms that the castor set was originally presented as a wedding present on Oct. 22, 1877 to her mother by Cpt. Gilmore.
This set is in very good antique condition with no dents or scrapes. However most of the silver plate has worn off due to its age. It\'s approx. 15 in high and 8 in. around and weighs about 5 lbs. Engraved \"Belle Merithew\".
