Vintage 1950’s Chinese Celadon/Turquoise Silk Brocade Robe Jacket Coat Kimono: $295.00
An utterly fantastic and immensely stunning vintage silk robe or coat. The label inside harkens back to 1950’s Boston, MA. Newbury St. is the high end fancy luxury shopping district of Boston. It’s like 5th Ave. in NYC or Bond St. London basically. It was sold at La Maisonette on Newbury St. which appears to have been a high end ladies fashion boutique. The few references to La Maisonette that I can find all mention the 1950’s, so I’m going with the 50’s as the general time period this garment was made. Possible it was the 40’s or early 60’s, it’s pretty hard to pinpoint. The hand sewn label seems to match with that period. The color of silk on this piece couldn’t possibly be nicer. Celadon would be the best descriptor in my opinion. There are chrysanthemum or lotus flowers decorating the piece I believe. The condition is incredible for its age. There are no holes. tears, or odors that I’ve noticed. There is only one notable stain. When looking at the robe straight on there are two small dark dots on the left shoulder area close to the collar. I’ve made no attempt to remove them. Someone adept in textiles may be able to do so. I’d think a professional certainly could. On one of the arms there is a very light discoloration on a leaf. Likely just from water or something. Overall it’s in impeccable condition. It is about 38.5” long from the top of the collar to the bottom. It is roughly 19” pit to pit. I am a male approximately 5’10”, 170lbs. It was much too small in the chest/pits for me to even put on without fear of tearing it. I hope that helps give an idea of the size since it’s not indicated on the label. I have to imagine this is a Chinese made garment but I cannot be sure. If not Chinese made its certainly in the Chinese style or chinoiserie. I just found it in a wealthy old Wellesley, MA estate. Wellesley is probably the wealthiest of all the immediate Boston suburbs. They had some other nice antique and vintage Chinese textiles in the home as well as many fine antiques and works of art. It had been hanging in a clean closet. I will ship ASAP! Thanks
