Wonderful vintage Martin of England expanding tennis belt, dating to the early postwar era circa 1950s.This beautifully constructed belt features an ornate gold-tone/brass-colored buckle with a raised crossed tennis rackets and tennis balls medallion surrounded by scrolling floral decoration. The belt itself is constructed from rows of small metal spring rings intricately interwoven with deep navy blue cord, allowing the entire belt to stretch and conform to the wearer.The reverse of the buckle is clearly marked:PAT. MADE IN ENGLANDPatent No. 660336 dates to 1949, and Martin produced these distinctive expanding belts with a variety of sporting motifs during the postwar period. Similar documented examples include cricket, boxing, golf and other sporting designs.Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The woven cord and expanding ring construction remain remarkably nice for their age. There is only light age-related discoloration/patina to portions of the buckle, as photographed. Please review the detailed close-up photos, which are part of the description.Measurement: Approximately 33” unstretched. This is an expanding/stretch design and will accommodate additional room.
