Classic vintage novelty prank from the S.S. Adams Company of Neptune, New Jersey.
At first glance, this looks like an ordinary can of “Fancy Salted Mixed Nuts.” Remove the lid, however, and the compressed spring snake jumps out of the can.
This example retains the colorful original mixed-nut paper label, screw-on lid, and the long cloth-covered spring snake. The snake has a black, tan and yellow spotted/leopard-style fabric covering.
S.S. Adams became famous for practical jokes and novelty items including joy buzzers, itching powder, dribble glasses and the legendary snake nut can. The snake-in-a-can concept was developed by company founder Soren Sorensen Adams and became one of the company’s most recognizable novelty products.
