Up for sale is a beautiful, highly detailed vintage mid-century Peruvian blackware pottery ocarina whistle, meticulously hand-crafted in the style of ancient Pre-Columbian artifacts. Modeled after the iconic ceramic work of the northern coastal Chimú culture (900–1470 CE), this piece elegantly depicts an alert quadruped, most likely representing the sacred Peruvian Hairless Dog (Viringo), a traditional guide to the afterlife in Andean iconography.
This is a fully functional musical instrument, not just a decorative statue. It features a built-in fipple (labium slot) neatly integrated into the upward-curling tail which serves as the mouthpiece. Two tone/finger holes are drilled into the chest, allowing the player to manipulate the pitch and airflow to create an authentic, haunting wind tone reminiscent of ancient ceremonial music.
The figurine is finished using traditional reduction-firing techniques to achieve its characteristic deep charcoal-black color. The body is adorned with intricate, hand-incised geometric triangle patterns that beautifully contrast against the burnished clay surface. To protect furniture, a previous collector neatly applied factory-cut white adhesive felt pads to the base of each paw.
