Caption typed onto photo: “Houston’s Bill Willoughby tries to block shot by Boston’s Cedric Maxwell in Saturday’s gamefarrar photo” This picture was published in the May 10, 1981 edition of the Austin American-Statesman newspaper, where the staff photographer is identified as Stanley Farrar. (An image of the newspaper page is provided in this listing for reference only.) This photograph was acquired directly from an estate sale at the Austin, Texas home of photojournalist Stanley Farrar, formerly of the Associated Press, Seattle Times, and Austin American Statesman (where he served as director of photography).
The reverse bears the backprint “THIS PAPER MANUFACTURED BY KODAK.” Published photographic-conservation research dates Kodak\'s use of this standard backprint from May 1972 to approximately 1989, making it consistent with a period print from the 1981 NBA Finals. Together with the typed “farrar photo” caption, direct Stanley Farrar estate provenance, and documented publication of this exact photograph in the May 10, 1981 Austin American-Statesman, the evidence strongly supports this being a working newspaper photograph from the period.
