Vintage original well worn 1990 Nirvana Bleach Kurt, Krist, Chad black Sub Pop +- T-shirt. I purchased this shirt directly from one of the Nirvana guys after their show at the 9:30 Club in Washington DC on the night of April 29th, 1990. A true piece of early Nirvana pre-fame and a college buddy drove up from Virginia Tech to go to the show, more to see Loop, the headliner for the show to be honest. But I had a CD of Bleach I was really digging on too at the time and wanted to see them as well. Thud was the local opening band I think, but we weren't familiar with them. It was a few hours drive and we got there a bit late and missed them. I recalled it had rained and things were wet outside. We went downstairs to the basement and the crowd was thin in the playing area between bands, but it started to fill back up a little by the time Nirvana was setting up, sound checking and about to get going. And then right off the bat it hit. They started off on about volume level 11+ and just went at it hard and cranked it up from there as the show went on. The volume of sound was crazy. Kurt just projected anger. The sh*t hit the fan and the sound level was just unbelievable in that cramped space. It was a sonic onslaught, like an on-going sound grenade. Some people just kind of left, couldn't take it. You could tell Kurt, Krist and Chad did not give an F--k. They just cranked it up even louder as the set went on. The intensity was mind blowing. The sound was just enveloping. When they were done, a lot of the crowd was just about gone, only a few left. People were just leaving in the middle of it, but I stuck around until the end, as painful as it was. I thought damn, Nirvana is some serious sh*t, they aren't messing around. The CD was hardcore, but they were times 10 live. I hate to say it, and no offense, but I don't really even remember much about Loop afterwards. I was kind of just in a recovery mode and they seemed tame and forgettable in comparison. Besides the Nirvana sonic beat down, my memories on the rest of the night are a bit hazy. It took me a while to recover from the onslaught of what I had just survived. I recall being a bit light headed during the Loop set and couldn't really focus on it, ears still ringing, brain buzzing. Nirvana was intense, and that is kind of an understatement. After the show was done, me and my buddy went outside to a now pretty empty still wet street and there was a white van with a trailer attached parked right there with a long hair band looking dude sitting there trying to sell stuff out the back of the trailer. So we went over to check it out and it was either Krist or Chad, I don't recall now which, but it wasn't Kurt I know, but think it was Chad. I told him the show was pretty cool and all that kind of lame stuff and asked about the shirts and what else they had. Kind of small talked a little because I sort of felt bad that they just literally blew most the crowd out of the club and now nobody really seemed too interested in what he was trying to sell. I had a feeling they were going to be sleeping in the van that night, maybe even right there. I ended up with this shirt and my buddy got a white one with a different design on it, think it was the cross-eyed smiley face one. I wasn't really into black shirts, but I didn't want to get the same shirt and thought this one was cool. After we finished up school later in the Spring, and a short stent working construction down in FL for my brother, me and the same buddy decided to go on a country road trip that Summer,1990. We ended up in San Francisco in Sept to visit another school buddy who was living there and then staying, mostly because we ran out of money and didn't have enough for gas back. About a year later, still in SF still trying to make gas money but somehow even poorer, I went to see Nirvana again at the Warfield Theatre in SF when they came to town for the now Nevermind tour on Oct. 26, 1991. They put on a great show. It was a much bigger venue, bigger crowd. They were more polished, had grown up some, a little more professional. By then everyone seemed to know who they were and nobody left mid show.But there was something about it. It just wasn't as raw and level 12 or 13 unreal like it was at the 9:30 club that night.Bleach was hard to handle and it was all in your face whether you liked it or not at the 9:30 Club. A year later the Nevermind Warfield show somehow gave the crowd what they wanted and it was a much bigger crowd and I didn't see them selling shirts out on the streets afterwards. They were big then, you could tell they had made it or just on the edge of it. 'Here we are now, entertain us. He's the one that likes all our pretty songs' - dead on prophetic.I still thought they were badass and now even better musically in some ways, but I kind of felt I'd already seen them at their best, or at least saw what I needed to see and never went to another show after that. A couple years later it was tragically over of course. I wore the shirt a lot for many years through the 90's and early 2000's and it kind of shows it. Once I thought it was starting to look like it had given me more than enough, I respectfully put it in a drawer to give it some rest. It has been there a few moves and many years now and maybe time to let it go. I have the memories and they were life changing ones. I was 24 then, a lot older now.
I don't know what size this one actually is as I either cut the tag off, which I tend to do to shirts if it scratches my neck, or maybe it never had one, not sure. It has some little white stuff there where one would be, but I don't remember what it was, probably was a little tag. I'm pretty sure it is most likely a men's M given my size at the time, but might be a L. I was about 5-8, 5-9 and around 160lbs back in the day. 36 years later, I'm about 5-8, 180 now and it is a little snug but still fits. My daughter shown wearing it is about 5-1, 100lbs. The photos show some measurements on it for reference.
