Herbert Michael Hart was an author and retired U.S. Marine Corps Colonel born in 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was the former Director of Public Affairs for the U.S. Marine Corps and one of the country\'s leading authorities on historic forts. Hart was a graduate of Northwestern University\'s Naval ROTC. He was commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduation from Northwestern\'s Medill School of Journalism in 1951. Hart served in Korea where he was twice wounded, and also in Vietnam and the Middle East. He was assigned to duties with the U.S. Navy for a total of 17 years during his 31 years of active duty. Hart\'s military awards include two Legions of Merit with combat \"V\", the Meritorious Service Medal, five Air Medals, two Purple Hearts, the Army Commendation Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal with combat \"V\" and the Combat Action Ribbon. Hart was a co-founder, volunteer executive director and newsletter editor for the Council on America\'s Military Past.
