MADISON, WISC.The Douglas Stewart Company was founded in Madison, Wisconsin in 1950 by Douglas Stewart, formerly manager of the University Bookstore at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The company originally specialized in supplying school and dormitory products to college bookstores, making this pair a great piece of vintage American collegiate history.These substantial formed-steel bookends feature a classic mid-century industrial design with a textured gray/silver finish, stepped architectural tops, open centers and raised diamond-shaped decoration. Long flat bases slide beneath the books so the weight of the books helps hold them securely in place.Condition: Original vintage condition with age-appropriate scratches, finish wear, oxidation and areas of surface rust, particularly on the backs and bases. Please examine photographs carefully. They have not been refinished, preserving their original vintage character. Both bookends retain the impressed Douglas Stewart Co.
