Vintage East German Superfest set of rocks (liquor / water) glasses. Ideal for whiskey, brandy or water for the designated driver. Good condition. Superfest is "unbreakable" glass that is 15x stronger than normal glass. You can still break it, it is just harder to break and not as fragile as normal glass.
THE SUPERFEST STORY:
In the mid-1970s, the DDR began to try to make conventional thin-walled commercial glass stronger and more heat-resistant. The goal was to have five times the lifespan of an ordinary drinking glass, but fifteen times lifespan was achieved. Other advantages included heat resistance, stackability, and lighter weight. The DDR regarded a super strong glass product as a key potential export and gave it priority for development. Originally called CEVERIT, the name was changed to Superfest to better appeal to foreign countries. However, Western countries were not interested in the idea of long-life glassware as it would be detrimental to their ability to sell replacements.
Production was initially limited to beer glasses but expanded to shot glasses, sekt (wine) glasses, vases, ice cream cups, and more. The main customer for Superfest glasses was the hospitality sector in the DDR.
