The cachepot is a white porcelain or fine ceramic planter featuring a traditional Neoclassical style. It stands on a slightly flared, circular pedestal base accented by a gilded gold trim along the bottom edge. This was imported from Italy to upper scale retail stores. This planter has its original price tag sticker from the 1960s with Pogues which was a premier upscale store in Cincinnati, Ohio. The bottom is simply marked Italy. This same pot style was sold by Tiffany's.
The main body of the vessel is decorated with crisp, vertical fluting that wraps entirely around the exterior, giving it the appearance of a classical Greek or Roman architectural column. The top edge finishes with a pronounced, wide rim highlighted by a brilliant gold-gilded border along the interior and exterior edge.
Just beneath this gilded rim is an intricate embossed frieze displaying a relief molding of stylized, repeating wave or scroll patterns. The central focal point of the planter is a prominent, highly detailed relief medallion of a lion's head, finished in a brilliant gold/gilt metallic glaze that stands out vividly against the clean white porcelain background. This planter does not appear to have ever been used for a plant and again it still has a sticker in the interior. See photos for details.
