Why does my sizing sometimes differ from the label?
In the past, I listed suits & tailoring according to the labelled size, but the resulting returns eventually made me rethink that approach. Since switching to a measurement-based system, returns on my tailoring have become exceptionally rare, which is why it’s a method I now trust and stand by.
My response reflects this too, including buyers who have specifically commented that my measurements gave them the confidence to buy a jacket in a labelled size they would normally have avoided.
Therefore I list the garment as the size it genuinely measures — giving you a much clearer and more reliable indication of how it will actually fit.
About the garment:
Now this beauty is a proper piece of British tailoring from James Meade Limited, cut from 100% linen in a beautifully understated oatmeal shade. The colour sits somewhere between stone, beige and a very pale natural grey, with the characteristic texture and slight tonal variation that gives pure linen so much of its appeal.
There’s something distinctly old-school about the cut. The three-button front, broad notch lapels and longer, more relaxed silhouette give it that elegant British tailoring shape. The natural character of the linen softens the formality beautifully — smart enough for tailored trousers and a shirt, but equally convincing with chinos, denim or an open-collar shirt.
The pocket configuration is particularly good and far from ordinary. Alongside the welted breast pocket and conventional opposite hip pocket, the other side features an unusual three-pocket arrangement: a full-size flapped hip pocket with a smaller flapped pocket and a narrow welt pocket positioned immediately above. It’s a subtle detail, but one that gives the jacket considerably more individuality than the average linen sport coat.
Further traditional details include four-button cuffs, handsome brown buttons and a completely ventless back, giving the jacket a particularly clean, uninterrupted silhouette from behind.
Inside, it is fully lined in a 50% viscose / 50% acetate lining, with the original James Meade Limited – Fine Quality Clothing label still present. The outer cloth is confirmed as 100% linen.
It’s the combination that makes this one: proper pure linen, an excellent neutral oatmeal colour, unusual pocket detailing and a traditional British cut. A very handsome sport coat with considerably more character than the plain cloth initially lets on.
Please note: There is a very subtle area of lighter colour to the front of the jacket, as shown in the close-up photograph. Due to the natural texture, tonal variation and slightly slubbed character of the linen cloth, it blends into the fabric remarkably well and is difficult to pick out unless you are specifically looking for it. I have photographed the area closely (see last photo) and mentioned it here for complete transparency.
