A whole parade in a glass box. This is a vintage Japanese diorama of an imperial court procession. About fifty tiny hand-painted figures, none taller than your thumbnail, escort a black-wheeled ox cart, the carriage Heian-era nobles rode in. There are riders on horseback, attendants holding red and floral parasols aloft, and courtiers in pink, saffron, sky blue and celadon. A mirrored back doubles the crowd.
It sits in its original glass case on a pale wood base with a scalloped apron.
It shows honest age. The silver tape at the case edges is worn and flaking, and there’s a water mark on the front of the base. The figures are bright and charming, with soft wear to the paint.
Approximately 16” long.
Put it on a mantel, a bookshelf or a collector’s desk. Kids won’t be able to stop looking at it.
Pickup in Boulder, or come to the HI LO SALVAGE open garage on Sat 10/24, 10–3.
