This is a large, beautifully costumed vintage Japanese display doll, standing approximately 21 inches tall and mounted on a rectangular black lacquered wood base. The doll\'s face and visible hands are finished in the traditional gofun technique, a shell-paste pigment built up in layers and polished to a smooth, porcelain-like sheen, a hallmark of quality Japanese ningyo craftsmanship rather than true porcelain in most examples of this style.
The doll wears a multi-layered silk kimono ensemble: an outer robe in cream and blush tones patterned with hexagon (kikko) motifs and stylized florals, worn over a rich navy under-kimono decorated with large appliqued gold and silver metallic floral medallions, and finished with a soft pink obi. The long, flowing black hair is swept into an elaborate upswept style at the crown with a bright yellow lacquered hair ornament (kanzashi) set at an angle, a dramatic styling choice that, along with the loose flowing hair down the back and formal court-style robes, is more consistent with a traditional bijin (beautiful woman) or Heian-court-inspired display figure than an actual geisha\'s dress, even though pieces like this are very commonly sold under the general trade term \"Geisha doll.\" The doll holds an open folding fan decorated with a maple leaf design, a classic accessory pose for this style of figure.
Dolls like this were produced in Japan through much of the 20th century, largely for the domestic gift and export tourist trade, and remain popular today as decorative display pieces and as an accessible entry point into Japanese ningyo collecting. No maker\'s mark or paper label is visible in the photos provided; please check the base and the underside of the stand closely for a signature, paper tag, or box, as a documented maker (such as Yoshitoku or another known doll house) would meaningfully add to the value.
Condition: Previously displayed in excellent condition.
A striking, large-scale piece for collectors of Japanese folk art, ningyo dolls, or Asian decorative antiques, equally at home in a curio cabinet or as a standalone display piece.
