Vintage Jesús Salmón Mexican Folk Art Wooden Stamp Box Marquetry Ox Cart 1940s For Sale

The Vintage Jesús Salmón Mexican Folk Art Wooden Stamp Box is a unique and collectible item featuring intricate marquetry of an ox cart from the 1940s. The small rectangular box is made of wood with a lid, showcasing a cowboy-themed design in brown, beige, red, and black colors. With dimensions of 5 inches in length and 2.5 inches in width. The Base and FrameMexican Mahogany (Caoba) or Cedar: The main outer box and lid structure are crafted from a solid tropical hardwood—most commonly native Mexican mahogany or cedar. This gives the box its warm, dark reddish-brown base color and distinctive straight wood grain. The Marquetry Inlay ArtworkMarquetry relies on using different species of wood to create a picture without using paint. The artist, Jesús Salmón, selected contrasting colored woods to build the scene:Orange/Yellow Tones (The Background & Cart): Typically made from Fruitwood or native Orange wood, which ages into a rich, warm golden hue.Red Tones (The Serape/Poncho): Created using thin veneers of Padauk or heavily stained tropical hardwoods to give the figure\'s clothing its striking pop of color.Dark Brown/Black Tones (The Details & Wheels): Crafted from deep Mexican Walnut or Granadillo to outline the ox cart, wheels, and shadows. The Interior DividersPine or Basswood Plywood: The internal slanted stamp dividers are constructed from a lighter, softer wood like native Mexican pine or basswood plywood. This was a standard cost-saving construction choice for souvenir items of this era, as the soft inner wood was hidden when the lid was closed.
