The pale gray-white porcelain body is decorated with black, red and soft flesh-tone enamels, raised white slip detailing and generous gold accents. Stylized reeds or bamboo and rolling cloud-like forms surround the figure, giving this small piece exceptional visual depth.
Daruma represents Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. In Japan, Daruma is associated with perseverance, resilience and good fortune—famously expressed by the saying, “Fall down seven times, stand up eight.”
The underside bears the hand-painted red 九谷 — Kutani mark and an original firing or vent hole. Despite measuring only approximately 2 inches high, the figurine has strong presence and detailed handwork.
Vintage condition with minor surface wear and light rubbing to the gold consistent with age. Small variations in the painting and glaze are characteristic of hand-decorated Kutani ware. Please review all photographs for condition.
