Lovely illustrated Edition of Tersen's book on Garibaldi. IN FRENCH.

Garibaldi is a fundamental figure of the ItalianRisorgimento, for having personally led and fought in a large number of military campaigns that allowed the constitution of aunified Italy. He tried, most often, to act under the investiture of a legitimate power, which does not make him strictly speaking a revolutionary: he was appointed general by theprovisional government of Milanin 1848, general of theRoman Republic in 1849by the Minister of War, and it was in the name and with the agreement of Victor Emmanuel II that he intervened during theExpedition of the Thousand.

He is nicknamed the "Hero of Two Worlds" because of the military undertakings he carried out both inSouth Americaand inEurope, which earned him considerable notoriety both in Italy and abroad. This is due to the exceptional international media coverage he received for the time, which recounted, sometimes romantically, his epic. Among the greatest writers, many, especially French ones,Victor Hugo,Alexandre Dumas,George Sandshowed him their admiration. TheUnited Kingdomand theUnited Stateswere of great help to him, offering him, in the difficult circumstances, their financial and military support.

A convinced republican, he put his ideas on hold, recognizing the monarchical authority ofCharles AlbertandVictor Emmanuel II, the unifiers of united action. In this, he opposedMazzinialthough he had been one of his followers at the beginning of his political life. The expedition of the Thousand would be the culmination of his action: he conquered the south of the peninsula which he handed over to Victor Emmanuel II, making himKing of Italy. His last battles intended to integrateRomeinto the Kingdom of Italy were failures due to the opposition ofNapoleon III'sFrance. The monarchy would entrust the task of conquering Rome to others.

Garibaldi was, at the time, a myth who also had detractors: the reactionary and clerical, anti-republican and anti-socialist milieu.
