Vintage Mexican Folk Art Amate Bark Painting Framed Deer & Bird Otomi/Nahua MCM:
$425.00

This is a newly custom framed piece of authentic Mexican Amate Bark Painting (Papel Amate). This vibrant piece of Mexican folk art features a classic, whimsical motif of a stylized deer and a brightly colored bird surrounded by bold, intricate floral designs.

Many people mistake this unique background material for thin cork due to its porous, heavily textured, and multi-toned brown appearance. However, it is actually a highly collectible, traditional handmade bark paper with a deep cultural history.

Based on the classic color palette, this piece is a vintage original dating from the 1960s to the 1980s (roughly 40 to 60 years old). It is in excellent vintage condition with incredibly bright, bold colors and a fully intact bark backing. It comes professionally housed in a brand new terqoise wood custom frame and terracotta matted border, ready to hang.

THE HISTORY & CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

Amate bark paper is an ancient Mesoamerican tradition dating back to pre-Hispanic times when the Maya and Aztec empires used the material for sacred religious ceremonies and historical codices. When the Spanish arrived, they banned the paper to suppress indigenous spirituality. The Otomi people secretly kept the papermaking recipe alive in remote mountain villages for centuries, passing it down through generations.

In the early 1960s, a unique cross-cultural collaboration was born: Otomi papermakers began providing their handmade sheets to the Nahua painters of Guerrero. This marriage of two indigenous cultures successfully revived the ancient craft and saved it from extinction.

THE HANDMADE PROCESS

Each painting represents hours of laborious, traditional craftsmanship:

Harvesting the Bark: Artisans carefully strip the inner bark of wild fig trees (which creates the dark brown tone) without harming the tree.

Boiling and Washing: The raw bark fibers are boiled in water with ash or lime for several hours to soften them.

Pounding the Fibers: The softened fibers are laid out in a grid pattern on a wooden board and beaten with a flat volcanic stone until they intertwine into a solid sheet.

Sun Drying: The sheets dry naturally in the sun, creating the distinct "cork-like" organic texture.

WHY THE VIBRANT COLORS?

The brilliant, opaque colors are a trademark of Nahua folk art, representing the festive spirit of Mexican culture ("la alegria de vivir").
